Nepal works exceptionally well for families precisely because it offers different things to every age group simultaneously. While teenagers track tiger pugmarks with a naturalist guide on foot in Chitwan, younger children watch elephant calves at the conservation centre. While grandparents sit on a Pokhara hotel terrace with Annapurna filling the morning sky, children learn to row a boat on Phewa Lake. While parents do a private heritage tour of Bhaktapur's ancient squares, children watch potters at their wheels in Pottery Square. Nepal accommodates everyone – if the itinerary is designed correctly.
We have been designing Nepal family holidays long enough to know what works at which age, where the logistical pitfalls are, and which hotels genuinely welcome children rather than merely tolerating them. The pace, the mix of activity and rest, the choice of hotels (pools matter when you have children), the balance between education and fun – all of it is calibrated around your specific family, not a generic family template.
Kathmandu Valley: The heritage sites are genuinely engaging for children with the right guide – one who tells the stories behind the temples rather than reciting dates, who finds the detail that catches a young imagination, and who turns a temple visit into an adventure. Swayambhunath (the Monkey Temple) is a particular favourite with younger children.
Chitwan National Park: The family highlight of most Nepal trips. Spotting a one-horned rhino from an open jeep at close range produces genuine excitement in children and adults alike. A canoe trip past crocodiles and river birds is calm enough for all ages. The Tharu cultural evening – traditional dance, local food, colourful costumes – is a consistent hit with children of every age.
Pokhara: Boat trips on Phewa Lake, the World Peace Pagoda hike, the excellent International Mountain Museum, easy lakeside walks, paragliding for older children and teenagers, and a lakeside promenade with good restaurants. Comfortable and beautiful.
Bandipur: A car-free medieval hill town that children find genuinely magical. The Siddha Cave (Nepal's largest cave – bats, stalactites, underground darkness) is a particular highlight for younger visitors.
We select hotels for family trips on specific criteria: pools, connecting rooms or family suites, reliable children's menus, good grounds for active children, and staff who genuinely enjoy welcoming younger guests. Gokarna Forest Resort (wildlife on the grounds, large property, forest setting), Kasara Resort Chitwan (excellent pool and children's wildlife activities), Temple Tree Resort & Spa Pokhara (central lakeside location with pool and easy lake access) and The Pavilions Himalayas (private villa space ideal for families wanting room to spread out) all meet our standards for family travel.
All our family itineraries minimise long road journeys by using domestic flights between destinations. Kathmandu (1,400m), Pokhara (884m) and Chitwan (150m) are all at altitudes with no acclimatisation concerns. We build midday rest time into active days and adjust the pace whenever needed. Comprehensive travel insurance including medical evacuation cover is essential for families – we provide guidance on appropriate policies.
