Bardia National Park covers 968 square kilometres of undisturbed sal forest, grassland and riverine habitat in Nepal's far western Terai – and it sees a fraction of the visitors that Chitwan receives. The result is an encounter with Nepal's wildlife on genuinely wild terms: no queue of vehicles at a sighting, no other tourists visible across the grassland, no sense that you're sharing the experience with anyone. For serious wildlife travellers, Bardia is the answer to Chitwan's relative crowding.
The park's Royal Bengal tiger population is Nepal's densest. Nepal's most recent national tiger survey recorded Bardia's highest density of tigers per unit area of any reserve in the country. The combination of experienced trackers, low visitor pressure and excellent habitat means that walking safaris here – led by naturalists who have spent years reading this forest – deliver tiger encounters that feel utterly authentic. One-horned rhinos (reintroduced and growing in number), wild elephant herds, swamp deer, blackbuck, leopard, sloth bear and the endangered Gangetic river dolphin in the Karnali complete a wildlife list that rivals anything in Asia.
Walking safari is the defining Bardia experience. Expert naturalists and trackers lead you through the forest reading pugmarks, territorial scrapes and alarm calls from prey species to locate tigers in their natural habitat. The movement is slow and deliberate, the atmosphere utterly different from a jeep safari. Encounters at genuinely close range do happen, and they are among the most extraordinary wildlife moments available anywhere in Nepal.
Full-day open-top jeep safaris penetrate remote zones of the park that are inaccessible on foot. In Bardia, the absence of large visitor numbers means you can spend extended time at any sighting without other vehicles crowding in. Rhino herds, elephant groups and leopard sightings are all possible on full-day drives.
The Karnali – one of Nepal's greatest rivers – forms Bardia's western boundary and is one of the last places in Nepal to see the endangered Gangetic river dolphin. Rafting and boating sections of the Karnali offer excellent riverside wildlife: gharial crocodiles, river birds, animals at the water's edge and dramatic river scenery. Mahseer fishing in the Karnali and Babai rivers is also possible for serious anglers.
With 400+ recorded species, Bardia is one of Nepal's premier birding destinations. The Bengal florican (critically endangered), lesser florican, grey-headed fish eagle and an exceptional range of raptors, wetland species and forest birds reward dedicated birding walks with specialist guides.
Bardia is best reached by domestic flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj (1 hour), followed by a 1.5-hour drive. We arrange all logistics. October to March is prime season; the park closes during monsoon (mid-June to mid-October). February and March are particularly productive as the dry season concentrates animals at water sources.
