Lumbini is one of the most sacred places on earth. It is the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama – the historical Buddha – whose life and teachings have shaped the spiritual lives of over 500 million people. Located in Nepal's Terai lowlands near the Indian border, Lumbini has been a pilgrimage destination since at least the 3rd century BC, when Emperor Ashoka made the journey and erected a stone pillar at the site bearing an inscription that still reads today: "Here the Enlightened One was born." The site was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.
For non-Buddhist visitors, Lumbini surprises with both its archaeological richness and its architectural variety. The Sacred Garden at the centre – containing the Maya Devi Temple (built over the exact birth spot), the sacred Puskarini bathing pond, the Ashokan Pillar and a Bodhi tree – is enclosed and deeply peaceful. Surrounding it, in a planned zone designed by Japanese architect Kenzo Tange, are more than 30 international monasteries built by Buddhist nations from across Asia, each in its own national architectural tradition. Walking between the Sri Lankan Theravada monastery, the Tibetan Kagyu monastery, the Korean temple and the Japanese World Peace Pagoda in a single afternoon is one of the most extraordinary architectural walks in South Asia.
The Maya Devi Temple is built over the precise birthplace of the Buddha, confirmed by archaeological excavation that revealed a marker stone and the oldest layer of brick construction at the site. Inside the temple, a bas-relief dated to the 3rd century AD depicts Queen Maya Devi at the moment of the birth, grasping a sal tree branch. The adjacent Puskarini pond – where Maya Devi bathed before and after the birth – and the sacred Bodhi tree above the ancient ruins complete the central site.
Emperor Ashoka's 3rd century BC stone pillar stands adjacent to the Maya Devi Temple. The inscription it bears is one of the most important archaeological texts in Asia – direct evidence, written by the most powerful ruler of the ancient world, of Lumbini's significance. The pillar still stands at its original position after 2,300 years.
The most efficient approach is a domestic flight from Kathmandu to Bhairahawa (40 minutes), then a 30-minute private transfer to Lumbini. We include Lumbini in several multi-destination Nepal itineraries and arrange all connections.
One full day covers the Sacred Garden and the most significant international monasteries. An overnight stay at a Lumbini property gives you access to the Sacred Garden at dawn before day-visitors arrive – the most peaceful and moving time to visit, particularly at the Maya Devi Temple when it opens for morning puja.
